. you tune in to hear a string quartet. senator jeff merkley, a democrat from oregon is trying to change that. he's got a proposal to force talking filibusters in the senate. it wouldn't change what i think is a central part in the senate, the 60-vote super majority, but it would make the filibuster into something that the minority had to put some effort into using. you have to want it. now, so i want to be clear on merkley's proposal. if it passed, the minority could still filibuster anything they wanted. they couldn't subject almost everything to the same 60-vote challenge we have now. all they would have to do is talk. tell the american people why. and they probably wouldn't even have to do that that much, because the majority can't just let them talk all the time, they have to let them get stuff done. but even that modest reform is too much for many senators. "the huffington post" reports that a bipartisan group of lawmakers led by john mccain and levin are proposing a counter proposal that does even less. it would eliminate some redundant opportunities to filibuster. give quicker co

a bit of snow in california, still a foot of snow across portions of cascades and washington and oregon we're talking close to two feet. very good news for anyone doing skiing. good news is this storm system is on the move we'll finally start to see improvement in weather conditions across portions of the west coast, seattle, down to california. christmas leave looks more tranquil. that snow will dumping snow in portions of rockies and colorado and wyoming. we'll be accumulating snowfall and eventually this storm is going to head into the center of the country. it will be a pretty strong storm and very cold air with it. so definitely we're going to be talking about snow accumulations texas panhandle, parts of arkansas and missouri and illinois. some of these countries don't see a white christmas. so we're talking about quite a bit of snow, up to six inches locally and higher amounts, a winter storm watch has been issued across the state of oklahoma. good news for anyone that wants snow in the center of the country. christmas eve, messy day out in southeast and thunderstorms ahead of tha
in the state of washington and oregon, feet of snow dumped on out here, good news for skiers, but not for those travelling out here. and the good news for the west coast, we'll start to see the system eastbound and you guys will clear out and parts of the rockies, and you can see stuff across parts of western colorado, utah, the state of new mexico and arizona and then as we head into later in the day, christmas eve and christmas day, the storm is going to ramp up. moving through portions of the central plains and produced about six inches of snow in some place that is typically don't see a white christmas and across parts of the texas panhandle, oklahoma, arkansas, missouri and a winter storm watch that has been issued across the state of oklahoma and you're likely going to continue to see these issued out as that system is headed your way and again, significant snow accumulation with up to six inches forecast for some of you. but, unfortunately on the southern end of the system where temperatures are too warm to see snow, we do have some severe weather possible tomorrow. large hail, damaging

of portland, oregon, three people are dead after a gunman went on a shooting rampage inside a mall filled with holiday shoppers. witnesses say it was a chaotic scene inside the mall as the man reportedly dressed in body armor and wearing a white mask opened fire with a high-power rifle. this morning, investigators are trying to learn more about the motive and the suspect who police say shot himself to death. nbc's jay gray joins us from portland with the latest details. jay? >> reporter: hey, there. yeah, bill, just a tragedy unfolded here yesterday afternoon and mall's still on lockdown early this morning as local, state and federal agents continue to comb the area looking for any evidence trying to answer obviously the questions of how and why all of this happened. they say that's going to take some time. as many as 60 rounds fired during the shooting rampage. as you talked about, two victims dead, one seriously injured but said to be in stable condition early this morning, and then the gunman, of course, turning the gun on himself. so, again, investigators trying to understand what may
. >>> a bus crash on an icy oregon highway kills nine people and leaves 20 others hurt. it happened just west of an area called dead man's pass. a charter bus lost control on the snow and ice covered highway, busted thaw guardrail and went several hundred feet down a steep embankment. rescue workers had to use ropes to bring survivors back up the hill in freezing temperatures. >>> new video out of russian where a 5th person has died following the plane crash. the moment of impact was captured on the dash board camera of a car as you see there. it crashed into the side of a highway sending pieces flying. no one on the roadway was killed. the latest death is another member of the crew on the plane. there were no passengers on board. investigators are looking at the black box to try and figure o out what caused the crash. they are reportedly focusing on whether the braking system failed. >>> secretary of state hillary clinton is in the hospital tonight. she's being treated for a blood clot that resulted from a fall after she fainted two weeks ago. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton

in oregon. jacob roberts roommate says he had a weird look on his face when he left the house. roberts apparently wanted to join the marines. a foot injury kept him from doing that. he shot and killed two people inside of a mall on thursday before he turned the gun on himself. a 15-year-old victim still remains in the hospital in serious condition. the mall is set to reopen later today. >>> this is a troubling story med af will honor recipient brutally attacked in an event over the weekend. police arrested and charged an 18-year-old. meyer is recovering after the attack. he was awarded the military's highest honor by president obama last year. he is credited of saving the lives of 13 americans and 23 afghan soldiers during a firefight in 2009. he was the first living marine to receive the award in nearly three decades. >> leon pineda has agreed to send 2 patriot missiles 400 troops to the country in order to beef up the country's defenses in the syrian attacks. th germany will send two muscles each. all 6 patriot missiles will be under nato control and should be operational by january.
is the very type of assault weapons we saw in sandy hook, aurora and the shopping mall shooting in oregon. you can go further back. those are the three last mass shootings in america. they all have the ar-15 assault rifle. let's give it a new name. these are military machine guns. these are weapons you can buy at walmart, and they can fire four to six bullets a second. 100 bullets in a minute. the killer that went to sandy hook school had enough guns and enough magazines and enough bullets to murder the entire school. and his intention was possibly to do that very thing. if that had happened you would have had 600 deaths of children in one incident. and i'm sure nobody would be arguing about this, but i cannot understand coming from britain, where in 1996 we had the massacre in dunblane scotland, 16 5-year-old children were killed. as a result, there was a complete handgun ban across the country. we've had no shootings like that since. at the same time in australia, they had a similar incident. 35 people killed in tasmania, they brought in big bans on these type of assault weapons, they've had
